Day 46 July 2nd Rawlins to Jeffery City, WY
Started the day from our little hotel room at the Brickyard Inn. It was old but very clean and comfortable. The ride was on WY 789. We had a magnificent tail wind and did 20 miles in an hour. The question is "How many times will we cross the Continental Divide?"
On this day it was our 3rd time. Split Rock Historical site showed where 4 routes used the rocks as landmark - Oregon, Mormon, Washakie and Pony Express. It is an area with the Sweetwater River running through it. Wild mustangs also graze freely. They came from Mexico and mixed with ranch horses. They have no predators. Yearly they are rounded up and put up for adoption. Our home for the night was in the town of Jeffery City. Population 66. Our lodging was a church set back a half a mile from the highway. There was no sign for the church or for the only bar/restaurant in town. You just had to guess and go there. This community chuch has hosted riders for years. The walls in the basement have wall art from the riders that come through and stay. From the locals at the bar we learned there were fireworks that evening. Why, in a town that size, on July 2nd, would they have fireworks? Didn't find out but sat on the church steps and enjoyed them.
